ICAC Qualifications and Membership Criteria

I. Post-graduate candidates with an M.Arch degree in Architectural Conservation from any university established by a Central Act, a State Legislature Act, IIT, SPA, or any institution affiliated with a university recognized by the UGC, COA, or AICTE, and governed by the Architects’ Act of 1972, are eligible for direct membership with ICAC. Candidates may avail this membership upon completing one year of post-qualification experience in conservation of the built environment and providing the requisite documentation.

II. Post Graduate Degree/ Master’s in Archaeology, Historical Conservation, Heritage Management, Structural Analysis and Appraisal of Historical Constructions/ International Fellowship from any foreign university recognized on reciprocal basis as per the Schedule in Architects Act 1972 with four (4) years’ experience in conservation of built environment, historical constructions etc.

III. B.Arch from any University established by a Central Act or an act of State Legislature, IIT, SPA’s or any other institute affiliated to a University recognized by UGC/COA/AICTE and Architects’ Act 1972; or B.Sc in Architecture from any foreign University/Institute recognized on reciprocal basis as per the Schedule in the Architects Act 1972 with ten (10) years of post-qualification experience in conservation of built environment.

IV. “Conservation Architect under ICAC” The title/designation and name shall in all respects and by all means be applicable to all persons with a Graduate Degree in Architecture from any University/Deemed University recognized by UGC and established by a Central Act or by an Act of the State legislature, IIT’s and SPA’s established by the Central Government and approved by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi, India. The said person should be an Architect registered with the Council of Architecture and should have a Master’s(Post-Graduate) Degree in Conservation from any University/Deemed University recognized by UGC and established by a Central Act or by an Act of the State legislature, IIT’s and SPA’s established by the Central Government and approved by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi, India or a Master’s Degree in Conservation (2 years course) from any foreign university recognized on reciprocal basis as per the Schedule in Architects Act 1972; or a Master degree in conservation completed before 2002 (York scholarship) having Bachelor in engineering background.

V. Conservation Professional under ICAC: The title/designation shall be applicable in all respects to all individuals holding a graduate degree in architecture from any university or deemed university recognized by the UGC and established by a central act or an act of the state legislature, as well as from IITs and SPAs established by the central government and approved by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi, India.
The individual must be an architect registered with the Council of Architecture and should hold a Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree in architecture from any university or deemed university recognized by the UGC and established by a central act or an act of the state legislature, as well as from IITs and SPAs established by the central government and approved by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi, India, with five years of field/professional experience in conservation. Alternatively, the individual may hold a Master’s degree in Conservation (1-year M.A./M.Tech course) from any foreign university, along with four years of field/professional experience in conservation.

Every subscriber to the Memorandum of the Society, every member of the Executive Council and every person who believes in the Aims and Objectives of this Society and whom the Executive Council may admit as a member shall be the ‘Members’ of the Society. The membership of the Society is open to any person who:
(a) Has attained the age of twenty-five years.
(b) Has completed graduation in Architecture along with post-graduate degree in Conservation Studies or a Masters/PhD in heritage conservation related studies.
(c) Promises to abide by the rules and bye-laws and all the decisions taken by the Society in respect of the amendments of the rules and bye-laws.
(d) Subscribes in writing to carry out to the best of his/her capacity the objects of the Society.
(e) Agrees to deposit an admission fee/ subscription as may be fixed by the Executive Council from time to time.

Every candidate for inclusion as a Professional Member shall:
(a) Be at least 25 years of age, and
(b) On the date of his application satisfy the Executive Council of his education and experience in Heritage Conservation as prescribed by the Council from time to time.
(c) Candidates having degree/diploma from a foreign university/ institution can be admitted to the Society in accordance with the list of approved universities/institutions duly recognized by the Society and approved by General Body on the recommendation of the Council. In case of any applicant holding degree from an institute not listed in the Society’s recognized list, the Council may consider the candidature after assessment of courses undertaken satisfactorily in the field of Heritage Conservation. Approval can be on basis of curriculum approved in the General Body Meeting or majority of the Executive Council members.

The Society may invite to be an ‘Honorary Member’ a distinguished person who in the opinion of the Executive Council, has made a substantial contribution in the field of heritage conservation, and who by means of either his position or his experience and contribution in matters relating to conservation, for a period of at least fifteen years, appears to the Executive Council to be able to promote or provide assistance in promoting the objectives of the Society. Provided that such members will not have voting rights for any matter of the Society such an election will be duly approved by the General Body.

The Executive Council may elect, to be an Institutional Member, any institution, academic body, research organization, non-governmental organization, government agency or department, or any other organization as the Executive Council may deem fit engaged in the fields of Heritage Conservation or related spheres recognized by the Executive Council, and who, in the opinion of the Executive Council may be able to render assistance in promoting the objectives of the Society. Provided that such members will not have voting rights for any matter of the Society such an election will be duly approved by the General Body.

The Executive Council may elect to be a Student Member a person who: –
(a) is at least 24 years of age;
(b) has successfully completed the post-graduate course in Heritage Conservation leading to university examination but is yet to get a degree from the Institution or University
(c) has commenced a course of study in Heritage Conservation leading to a recognized
diploma or university degree

MEMBERSHIP FEE

The grant of membership to any person shall be subject to the approval of the Governing Body of the Society. The rate of subscription for all the members shall be as follows, payable only at the time of enrolment as a member.

 An applicant meeting the criteria is eligible for the registration as the member of Indian Conservation Architects Community (ICAC) upon demonstration of evidence. Annual subscriptions are payable on the first day of April every year. The Honorary Members are not liable to pay any subscription charge.

Termination or cessation of Membership:
A Member shall lose his/her membership on the following grounds and reasons and the Executive Council is empowered to take such decisions:
(a) On his/her death.
(b) On his/her absence without permission of the President in three consecutive meetings.
(c) On his/her resigning from the membership of the Society.
(d) Member who becomes of unsound mind.
(e) Member who is hindrance to the achievements of the aims and objectives of the Society.
(f) Member who in the opinion of the Executive Council has breached the code of ethics of the Society.
(g) Member who does not subscribe his membership fee.
(h) Member who has been found to mis-represent the facts relating to their eligibility for membership.

Refusal of membership:
The decision of the Executive Council will be final on all matters relating to the refusal and granting of membership on a case-to-case basis.

Re-admission of an expelled member:
The decision on any matter relating to the re-admission of an expelled member shall be the responsibility of the Executive Council who can re-consider the reasons for expulsion or termination of Membership only under clause b, c, g and h, as mentioned above.
